How to make a magic ring

The adjustable loop that starts every amigurumi and round coaster, with no hole in the middle.

How to make a magic ring

The magic ring (also called the magic circle) lets you start crochet in the round and pull the centre completely closed. You only need a hook and some yarn. Our crochet starter kit has both.

You will need

  • A ball of medium-weight cotton yarn
  • A 4–5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors

Steps

  1. Lay the yarn tail across your palm and wrap the working yarn around two fingers so it crosses over the tail, making a loop.
  2. Slide the hook under both strands where they cross, catch the working yarn and pull up a loop.
  3. Yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook to make one chain. This holds the ring together.
  4. Work single crochet stitches into the ring, going under both the loop and the tail each time. Six is a good number to start.
  5. Hold your stitches and gently pull the tail. The ring closes up. Join to the first stitch with a slip stitch.

Tip: if the ring won’t close, you probably crocheted over only one strand. Pull the tail gently and see which strand moves.
